Therefore prepare your minds for action; discipline yourselves; set all your hope on the grace that Jesus Christ will bring you when he is revealed.

1 Peter 1:13

2012 promises to be an exciting year. We can look forward to the Queens Diamond Jubilee and preparations are already underway to celebrate this in the parish. Then of course there is the Olympics and the torch will pass through Brough for us all to see. But before we get there I am conscious not of what I should gain, but what I should loose – a few pounds (of weight) would be a good start. But Lent is not all about abstenance, but a discipline of gaining new spiritual strength for the days ahead. During Lent, I have committed myself to write an essay on Benedictine and Fransiscan Spirituality to see how different monastic traditions might help our churches better find their spiritual heartbeat.

Lent is the time for trimming the soul and scrapping the sludge off a life turned slipshod. Lent is about taking stock of time, even religious time. Lent is about exercising the control that enables us to say no to ourselves so that when life turns hard of its own accord we have the stamina to yes to its twists and turns with faith and hope.” St.Benedict

What wise words for difficult times. Perhaps the austerity measures needed to stabilize the economic downturn and repay our national debt are like a seaon of Lent for the UK. The slipshod ease of the previous decade has to be counterbalanced with the stock taking, the control, the development of a stamina for us to be equipped to face the years ahead.

This is no less so in the spiritual life. The complacency of spirit permitted in times of ease must now be challenged. Inevitably this means controlling our physical lives. This year we are offering a Deanery Lent course led by our Archdeacon, the details of which you will find in this magazine. It will tour the Parishes on Wednesday evenings and transport can be arranged if you need a lift. Please make this a priority as we spend time drawing ourselves closer to God that he may prepare our hearts for the message of Easter. There is much to celebrate this year not only nationally, but also spiritually. These celebrations are better appreciated with proper preparation.   Blessings from Richard.
